Local Election Candidates 2024

Here is your list of candidates from Worthing Green Party for the 2024 Worthing Borough Council elections!

Goring Ward - Ian Davey

Ian Davey

Ian has lived in Sussex for over 40 years and in Worthing for the last 8. He has vast experience of local government and working in and with local communities. Ian cares passionately about where we live and believes everyone should be able to enjoy safe streets, breathe clean fresh air and bathe in sea that is free of sewage pollution. Ian is organised, hard-working and loves getting things done for the Goring community. Ian says, “I know that like me you’re worried about the constant pressure to build on our precious Goring Gap. Yes, we need new homes - but on brownfield sites - not on our last green spaces. "Goring needs a second strong voice on Worthing Council, free to speak up for you. Ian will stand up for what you care about, will work hard to safeguard Goring’s precious natural spaces, help make thestreets safer for everyone and will work with others for the bestinterests of Goring and Worthing.

Broadwater Ward - Valerie Knight

Valerie Knight

I am standing for the Green Party  because it is the only party which puts equal importance on  saving our habitat for future generations - I have five grandchildren - and empowering working people-  the 99%. All other parties now seem captured by multinationals, I do not believe this has happened to the Green Party. I believe in community and people power and have always been involved in building community wherever I have lived.  I live in Broadwater and am  currently involved in a campaign to make the streets safer for children accessing schools , and I also work with a post code community in my street to bring neighbours together and cut our consumption by neighbourhood sharing of our resources.

Castle Ward - Nellie de Goguel

Nellie de Goguel

Nellie is a sustainability specialist and content producer who is deeply passionate
about community and people-first policy. She is tired of the deep corruption
poisoning our political systems; she believes the government should serve the
interests of the community, not the wealthy few. Nellie has lived in Worthing for over
two years and loves taking her dog for walks by the sea.

Central Ward - Jo Paul

A local councillor has the unique opportunity to tackle the issues you find on your doorstep – recycling, litter, sustainable development. They get to work closely with you in finding out what local matters most concern you and work to bring about change in the neighbourhood you call home. This is an important and distinctive role, and one that I take very seriously. It is a special privilege and joy to be welcomed into my neighbours’ homes for a cup of tea, to discuss the local concerns that matter to them personally. To me, this relationship is at the core of what it is to be a local councillor.

Increasingly, the issues on our doorsteps must be considered within a much larger context. The decisions we make in Central Worthing have wider ramifications, just as we must consider the effect of decisions made at the county and national level here. Worthing has the opportunity to be a leader on the most important issues of the day, bringing in policies that recognize climate breakdown and work to prevent it, that protect our natural environment and encourage young people to cherish it, and that support the most vulnerable in society, cultivating a culture of compassion.

I live in Worthing with my partner, dog, cat and little one, and love to walk, run and cycle my way through our streets and parks. As a campaigner, I organized a petition asking the Borough Council to Declare a Climate Emergency and set up a monthly running club for picking up litter in Central Worthing. By day, I am an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Sussex and a published author and broadcaster, having appeared on BBC 2, BBC 4 and Channel 5, BBC Radio 3 and Radio 4 and written for the Telegraph and Prospect.

Durrington Ward - Jimi Taylor

Jimi Taylor - Deputy Chair

I will be standing as candidate for Durrington Ward because I want to advocate for environmental and social justice in our local area, while providing a voice for the young people of Worthing. One of the best features of Worthing is its connection between land and sea, with the Downs to the north sandwiching our busy town with the beach and I would strive to protect this unqiue environment that we live in, while keeping those in charge accountable for our climate. If elected in May, my top priority as councillor would be to help local residents with issues that affect their everyday lives no matter how big or small and to protect our green spaces like the Durrington Recreation Ground, so that we can all enjoy what our local wildlife has to offer!

Gaisford Ward - Stephen Carleysmith

Stephen Carleysmith

I have lived in Worthing for 47 years and have enjoyed bringing  up my family here in this pleasant town between the Downs and the sea.  As an active member of Worthing Green Party I want to make this area an even happier and healthier place to live and work. I cycle daily in town and I am keen to support active travel in Worthing, and to discourage speeding commuter traffic through residential areas. I will help you defend and improve our green spaces, and fight enlargement of the A27 with its unacceptable noise and air pollution. As your Green Party candidate, I support more affordable and sustainable housing, a well-funded publicly run NHS, closer co-operation with the EU, and a fairer and more equal society.

Heene Ward - Constantine de Goguel

Constantine-de Goguel (1)

I have lived in Worthing for 12 years now and seen tremendous demographic change in that time with young families moving from Brighton and London to enjoy the quality of life here. A vibrant social life and amenities are growing all the time. However, we must not be complacent. There is an unacceptable level of child poverty and homelessness. We have oversubscribed foodbanks. The local ecology is threatened with sewage and plans to grab green space for development. We need better and more widespread public transport. It is up to us to fight for social justice and social wellbeing in Worthing.

Marine Ward - Julie Dawe

Julie Dawe

I am standing as a candidate for Worthing Green Party because I believe everyone deserves the chance to vote for a party that puts people before profits, and cares as much for the health of the environment as for the health of the economy.

There are many difficult issues facing local councils at the moment, but these would be a few of my priorities if I was elected as a Councillor.

1. I would love to be able to swim in our sea without worrying about water quality. I would work to put pressure on the Government and Southern Water to stop pumping ever more sewage into our waters.

2. I want to see a more widespread, reliable and affordable public transport system, allowing people to leave their cars at home and so improving air quality as well as lessening congestion and travel costs.

3. I believe that homelessness has no place in the 21st century. I would encourage more investment in public housing and a joined-up approach with charities, health and support services and employment agencies to get a grip on the issue.

Northbrook Ward - James Darrall

James Darrall

I’m James, I’ve lived in the Worthing area for the past 7 years and have been a member of
the Green Party for over a decade now. I’m an active member of the local party and have
acted as party treasurer for the past couple of years. I decided to stand for the Green Party
in Worthing because I care deeply about my local community, our green spaces and the
potential that could be unlocked by enacting greener policies in our area. For me, the best
thing about living in this community is our access to some of the country’s finest coastal and inland nature, and that’s why my top priority as a Councillor would be to act to protect our countryside, sea and rivers from the rise of sewage pollution. I also care deeply about
enacting safer speeds in our urban areas and, as a keen cyclist, putting greater provisions in place for access to cycle paths.

Offington Ward - Steve Rhodes

Steve Rhodes

There are some great ideas being discussed for Worthing but we need Green Councillors to help turn these into the actions which are essential to tackle the climate and ecological emergency. I want to work with others to make more happen more quickly to make Worthing a better place for everyone

Salvington Ward - Sonya Mallin

Sonya Mallin

How we behave and the policies we support affect our whole environment - from hedgehogs surviving in our back gardens, to fossil fuels powering cars polluting our air. It affects whether houses built in Worthing are on the Goring Gap and who profits from that decision.

It’s time for us to stop pretending there’s no connection or that we can’t do anything about our future. We are all connected and change is definitely possible.

A vote for me is a vote for the Green Party. It's a different way and it's about:
• Standing up for an economy for tomorrow that has improved quality of life and wellbeing at its heart.
• Ensuring our children get the support they need - in time and without having to fight for years.
• Not putting shareholder profit ahead of our local environment - making sure new homes are built on appropriate land which benefits everyone.
• That’s what I stand for and that’s why you should vote for your Salvington resident - Sonya Mallin - for the Green Party.

Selden Ward - Clare Marshall

Clare Marshall

I grew up in Worthing and I am passionate about improving the area for everyone who lives here. I believe it’s important to take care of our valuable green spaces, as well as ensuring we have a sewage free sea for all to enjoy. This would be a top priority for me, as well as pushing the council to take more action on climate change.

Tarring Ward - Karen Brooks

If elected, I would fight for improved facilities for cycling and better public transport. Social, sustainable housing would also be a priority
